Cob Sauna, Co. Mayo, Ireland.
This sauna can sit eight people and is heated by a solid fuel stove. It was designed with the idea of keeping the building process as simple, strightforward, "green" and low cost as possible and small enough to be constructed by one person.
The foundations are rubble trench, topped with a stone stem wall, while the wooden roof is capped with a layer of sod. The walls are made of Cob-a mixture of clay, sand and straw. The floor and stove surround are brick. The interior walls are insulated with a mix of compressed straw and clay, with a lighter manufactured insulation in the ceiling. Both are finished with Pine.
The combination of intense heat from the stove and the excellent insulation easily drives the temperture above 40'C (100'+F). It makes for an excellent sauna :-).
